Tips for Collide-o Card Game

February 2nd, 2010

Collide-o Card Game is an absolute blast, but also is more fun if you understand what you need to do and have an idea of some ways to make you more successful. Today we will provide a few tips for this family Game that just might make you a little better than everyone else.

1. Turn the cards so that they are facing the same direction as the card line that is being built. This will help you more easily see places you can place your cards as the card game is being played
2. Playing your cards on the line is more important than adding cards to your hand from the draw pile. If you have cards that will play make sure that you place them on the line before drawing them into your hand.
3. If the game slows down and it looks like you might be the only player that has a card that will play don’t be in a huge rush to play it. Instead look through the cards in your hand and see if any will play on top of it. Then see if there are any that will play on top the second card. Now when you go to lay that first card you will be in a positsion to place cards in rapid succession.
4. Focus on the middle colors of the cards in your hand. Those are going to be the ending colors on the cards that have already been played. I look to see if i have a match on the middle colors and then see if the next color matches. If is a fast way of moving through your hand and quickly placing your cards in the game.
5. Watch for other players to make mistakes. Letting people get away with illegal placements won’t help you win. If also is very distruptive to the other player to have to add a card back to their hand and try and regroup. If you see an illegal placement call it to their attention.

These are just a few of the key tips in playing the Collide-O card game. If you have any additional tips that you think improve your chances of winning this family game send us an email and we will add them to our list. please send email to info@gamzgames.com.

Collide-O Card Game Rules

February 1st, 2010

Collide-O is a fast paced card game that keeps every player moving. I was first introduced to collide-o about two months ago when we played with some of our extended family. Traditionally when we have time we like to play a more serious and detailed board game, but when you just have a few minutes collide-o is a great choice. This game has incredible repeat playability because it presents a different cards in a different order every time you play.

Collide-o is a game where speed rules. The deck is divided up evenly among the players with one card being set in the center of the table. Each player may bring 4-5 cards into their playing hand. As soon as a card is played they may add an additional card from their draw pile. The point is to be the first player to get down to a single card. You move through your cards by placing them on the cards that have been played, or on the initial card if no one has played a card yet.

Each card is broken into three sections that have colors on them. You play a card on the outside on the line that is being created, play can go in either direction away from the center, but can never be played back towards the center. You must lay a card that has two matching colors that are the same color as the two sections you are laying the card on top of. There are some wild cards that can be played as any color, their are also some sections that have two colors on them. These sections can be played as either color.

Once the initial card is turned face up it is a ferocious battle to get down to your last card. If everyone playing gets stuck then you remove and discard the last card that was played and then begin setting cards on the line again. One additional rule to support this card game: If you see another player place a card that does not fit call attention to the mistake, if it was indeed an error have them remove the card from the line and add it back into their hand. Play immediately resumes.

Collide-O is a card game that you will love, if is fun, fast paced and slightly addicting. It is fast enough to play in 5 minutes, but fun enough to play for hours.

Days of Wonder

January 13th, 2010

Days of wonder is the company that stands behind one of the most successful games released in recent history. Ticket to Ride put Days of wonder on the map and with the other popular titles that they have released, they have become one of the most recognizable companies in the industry. Most gamers are familiar with the Ticket to ride series, but are unaware of the other great titles by Days of Wonder.

Some of their other titles that we recommend include:
Shadows over Camelot, memior 44 and collissium

Check out any of their games and you won’t be dissappointed.

Cooperative Game Play

January 12th, 2010

Playing cooperative games might just be an excercise in business and communication. Just a few nights ago i introduced a new group of people to Pandemic, which in my opinion is one of the very best cooperative games. Throughout the game we had to over communicate, share ideas on thoughts on how each person should proceed and at times scramble to prevent an outbreak from occuring.

In addition to having a great time we learned how to better communicate with each other and work together. During the last round of the game we thought that we were going to lose the game. We had almost run out of moves to make and we were on the brink of defeat. Several players at the table even expressed their frustration and disapointment at losing to the game. We took a few minutes before throwing in the towel to talk about any possible ways in which we could win. After several minutes of deliveration and good old fashioned talking we discovered that we had the ability if we moved our pieces just right to get to the final city that we needed and cure the final virus. This a very fun and exciting ending to challenging game. Had we tried to function independently we would have lost. It was only through team work and communication that we found the single way to win and together we did it. Everyone who played will remember that were were on the brink, but came together to pull it off.

Since that game just a few days ago i have witnessed a few break down in communication and team work in the business world. I stopped and wondered if these people really knew how to work together, had they ever stared defeat in the face and together worked through the problem. Would taking some time in the business setting to play cooperative games with teams improve their performance? At the very least it would improve their communication and it may even help to strengthen some relationships that need work. The next time you are thinking about an out of hte box way to bring your work team or family together and want to improve their ability to communicate and coordinate i fully recommend taking the time to play a cooperative game and i think Pandemic would be a great place to start.

Cooperative Games

January 8th, 2010

Cooperative Games are something that i was just recenlty introduced to. After having played a few i can only say that i wish someone had introduced me to this cooperative style of play a long time ago. Working together as a team to defeat the board is a challenge. The games usually have several level of difficulties that can be played and can challenge even the most experienced gamers.

Cooperative Games will challenge your teamwork and communication. They will push you to make decisions, to take one for the team and it will also lead to mistakes that may cost you the game. The great news about these games is you can play them over and over with new challenges, new set ups and a new sense of urgency if the game just won.

Cooperative Games are definately a must have for competative families who would kill each other to win the game. By placing everyone on the same side you are in it together. You walk away from the game excited for the next time and greteful that you were able to play with your family and friends. I personally don’t like losing, i don’t think most people do. This gives me an outlet to play with one person, or up to 7 and still havae a great time without the threat of being beaten.

I highly recommend trying a few of the cooperative style games. Two of my favorite are Pandemic and Shadows over Camelot. While the games definately have some similarities they are very different and will give you a good idea of what cooperative play is all about.

Ticket to Ride 1910 Expansion

December 20th, 2009

1910The Ticket to Ride 1910 Expansion has generated a lot of questions over the last few weeks. As families are getting ready for christmas they are trying to find new fun ways to play their favorite board games. Ticket to Ride is such a popular game that the 1910 expansion is clearly generating a lot of interest.

The most common question asked is; “will i be able to play the game with more peope?” The answer is No. The expansion is a game expansion, not a player expansion. It provides some new destination cards, provides full size playing cards for both the train cards and the destinations instead of the minature cards that are provided in the original game. TTR 1910 also levels the playing feild. You can play “big cities” which removes all the little dinker routes and allows for longer distances and more competition to complete the longer routes. There are also variations that allow you to take one big cities destination and two smaller destination routes.

I really enjoy the additional game play options that come with the ticket to ride 1910 expansion. I also appreciate the full size cards, they are much easier to pick up and keep your hands on.

Stratagem is a Gem of a Game

December 7th, 2009

Stratagem is a game that is a delight from the first round on. In a fairly simple and straigh forward game play you get the excitement, the challenge and the ups and downs of a much more complex and lengthly strategy game.

Each player works to for a three by three grid that will score more points than their opponents grid. Match colors, number, or make consecutive number runs to score the most points. Pay attention to what you opponents are doing because their is a theif card that can be used to spoil someones progress. Play your own theif card to remove a theif, or play a yellow gem card right over the top.

Each round the deck is shuffled and a new hand is dealt to each player and the starts again. You play 2-4 rounds and the person with the highest combined score at the end wins the game. Be the first player to complete your grid and you get an extra three points. A winning hand will be between 16-25 points, so being the first out with a good grid is a big advantage.
